Reading and Learning Disabilities
According to the Learning Disabilities of
America, the term "Learning Disability" is an
umbrella term used to describe a number of learning
difficulties. Some learning disabilities may include
dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia,
dyspraxia, apraxia, central auditory processing disorder,
non-verbal
learning disorders, aphasia, dysphasia and
visual
perceptual/visual motor deficit.
Generally speaking, individuals with learning
disabilities have average to above average
intelligence level, with deficits in very specific
areas. The difficulty with learning disabilities is
that they are not always apparent or easy to detect
and identify. As such, sometimes a great deal of
time goes by before a learning disability is
identified. Even then, appropriate services may not
be immediately available. That is why it is
imperative that parents take the lead to teach their
children to read before they begin school!
